FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions regarding this creative project

Q1: What is the goal of this work?

Jaxan:  Our goal is to educate the public on how to behave in a respectful and safe way during a police encounter. We want to create entertaining and creative materials that reflect the diversity of our society and the challenges of different groups. We acknowledge the history of injustice and violence that has affected Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, and Brown communities, as well as people with mental illness and low income, in their interactions with the police. We hope to improve the relationship between the police and the community by promoting mutual understanding and respect for the rule of law.

Q2: Do you believe in defunding the police?

Jaxan: Absolutely not!  We all know that when police fulfill their duty to serve and protect their communities, they serve a necessary and beneficial purpose. Much of the time, they do. If you defund the police and become a victim of a crime and need serious help, who else are you going to call...Ghostbusters?

Q3: How much of an impact does our behavior have on the outcome of a police encounter?

Jaxan: I believe, your behavior can play an immense role in the outcome. No one deserves to die simply for disobeying routine police commands. Too often, though, minor breaches of conduct during police encounters—even those stemming from being nervous or fearful can give police (legitimate) justification to use excessive and sometimes deadly force.  A bad cop can use your bad behavior as justification to harm you, as well.  This book and companion video seeks to do away with such flimsy justifications once and for all.
